Junior Police Academy

The Junior Police Academy (JPA) is a summer camp designed to strengthen the connection between law enforcement and local youth, giving them a chance to see what it's like to become a cadet police officer over their summer vacation. Many different police-oriented activities are planned that will provide them with a week of fun and educational opportunities.

This FREE week-long summer camp is modeled loosely after the police academy that we attend to become sworn peace officers. The JPA is geared toward Leander ISD students, ages 11 to 13 years old. Junior Cadets will be introduced to activities such as competing in an obstacle course, group marching drills and field events, repelling, fingerprinting, crime prevention, and many other indoor and outdoor classes. Cadets also get a first-hand look inside police equipment such as patrol cars, special use vehicles, SWAT vehicles, and fire department apparatus. Cadets will also participate in basic handcuffing, simple self-defense tactics, personal safety principles, and other police-related and age-appropriate skills geared to be fun, but challenging. At the conclusion of the academy, students will participate in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate that acknowledges their active participation, endurance, and hard work. Previous Cadet Graduates are not eligible to attend the Junior Police Academy a second time, as space is limited to 20 cadets per class if we can schedule 2022 summer sessions and we want to give this opportunity to as many different cadets as possible.

The camp is conducted from 8 am to 4 pm at the Leander Police Department, located at 705 Leander Drive, Leander, Texas 78641.

Please complete and attach the application, medical information sheet, parental release, and release of liability, for each child attending.

Application Deadline - TBA

There are only 20 slots available for each summer academy camp, so don't delay in turning in your application. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications need to be hand-delivered to the Reception Desk at 705 Leander Drive, Leander, Texas 78641. The applications can also be mailed, but please note that using this method of delivery could cause a delay in receipt and your child may not be accepted.
