About Juneteenth

Juneteenth National Independence Day, which became a federal holiday in 2021, commemorates an end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of both the Civil War and slavery, in accordance with President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth today is a symbol of the human spirit achieving victory over cruelty and oppression, and its anniversary serves to remind us that endurance, determination, and perseverance can change our world for the better.
