Project Summary

The Downtown Fire Improvements project will replace aging water lines in Old Town Leander to improve water service reliability and fire flows for residents and businesses in the district. Infrastructure includes a new 12-inch water main from Hero Way to Broade Street and 8-inch lateral lines along Broade Street, West Drive, and Bagdad Street. see map

Funding for this project is provided, in part, by the City's utility fund and by an interlocal agreement with CapMetro.

Project Timeline

  • 2021-23: Acquired right-of-way for infrastructure
  • Nov. 1-30, 2023: Installation of water line along Broade Street from West Drive to US 183. 
  • Dec. 4-11, 2023: Installation of water line through Brushy Creek from Hero Way West to Bagdad Street.
  • Dec. 11-20, 2023: Installation of water line along West Drive from Broade Street to Willis Street.
  • Jan. 2-8, 2024: Installation of water line along West Drive near South Street intersection.
  • Jan. 10-12, 2024: Installation of water line along Bagdad Street from Broade Street to Willis Street.
  • Jan. 16-31, 2024: Installation of water line along Bagdad Street from Willis Street to South Street.

Project Updates

11/30/2023 - Contractors successfully installed new water lines along Broade Street and will complete cleanup activities through Jan. 1, 2024.

10/10/2023 - Construction activity will impact Old Town commercial and residential properties. Special considerations for construction activities will be made to accommodate special events to include the Old Town Christmas Festival and Parade, MLK Day March and Celebration, and the Old Town Street Festival.
